Portsmouth Football Club

Overview:

In my final year at the University of Portsmouth, I had the unique opportunity to secure a client project that combined my passion for football and design. Collaborating with the media team at Portsmouth Football Club, I designed match day graphics for the highly anticipated match between Portsmouth and Charlton. This project allowed me to apply my design skills to create compelling visuals for a prominent football club.

Challenge:

The goal was to design impactful, straightforward graphics for match day, incorporating key components such as player graphics, club branding, and colour schemes. The challenge was to create visuals that not only represented the team’s identity but also captured the excitement of the game and resonated with the fans.

Solution:

I focused on creating visually striking match day graphics that were aligned with the club's traditional identity. The design incorporated the following elements:

  • Club Branding & Colour Scheme: The graphics were built around Portsmouth’s iconic blue and white colours, ensuring that the visuals were instantly recognisable and stayed true to the club’s brand identity.

  • Player Graphics: Featuring dynamic player images, I integrated bold typography to highlight key players, match details, and build excitement around the game.

  • Impactful Design: I aimed for a clean, minimalist style that conveyed the necessary information without overwhelming the viewer. This approach ensured that the design was easy to digest while still making an impact.

Outcome:

While the design was ready for deployment on match day, the arrival of COVID-19 brought unforeseen challenges that prevented the visuals from being used in the intended capacity. Due to the lack of fans in the stadium, my designs did not see public display as initially planned. Nonetheless, this project served as a significant learning experience and provided valuable insight into the demands of sports media design.

Conclusion:

Despite the challenging circumstances, working with Portsmouth Football Club was an immensely fulfilling project. I had the opportunity to create designs that were aligned with the team’s brand and resonate with fans. Although the designs did not see the public debut I had hoped for, the experience reinforced my passion for sports design, and I am eager to continue creating visually impactful work for future match day graphics.
